Our Sixth Research Retreat in Weserschlösschen Nienburg

On September 5 and 6, 2024, our PhD students and Principal Investigators gathered for a two-day Research Retreat at the Weserschlösschen in Nienburg. The event was designed to facilitate in-depth discussions on research, develop essential academic skills, and strengthen the collaboration between students and supervisors.

Retreat Day 1 | September 5, 2024

The retreat opened with a welcome from Ralph Ewerth, who introduced the agenda for the two days. The morning session focused on strategies for writing successful research and scholarship proposals, providing valuable insights for the PhD students.

The highlight of the day was a keynote by Paul Tschisgale from IPN Kiel, titled “Towards Process-Based Feedback Generation: Using AI and Process Mining Techniques to Investigate Physics Problem Solving.” Tschisgale’s presentation explored cutting-edge approaches to feedback generation using AI, sparking engaging discussions on the application of these technologies in educational settings.

In the afternoon, PhD students presented posters on their current research progress, fostering productive discussions and receiving valuable feedback from their peers and supervisors. The day ended with a relaxed evening, including a PhD/PI meeting, dinner, and a pub quiz.

Retreat Day 2 | September 6, 2024

Day two featured workshops on scientific writing, handling reviewer comments, and a free work phase for individual meetings and focused research efforts. A practice dissertation defense was followed by an open discussion on defense skills and general expectations.

The retreat concluded with a reflection on program developments and financial updates. Overall, the event provided both structured learning and informal opportunities for collaboration, contributing to the growth of our research community.
