Our Second Research Retreat in Schloss Etelsen

Second retreat in Schloss Etelsen

Introduction

From September 20 to 22, 2022, our second Research Retreat took place at the picturesque Schloss Etelsen near Bremen. This event aimed to bring together our PhD students and Principal Investigators (PIs) to discuss current research projects, develop new ideas, and strengthen collaboration. The PhD Day on September 20 provided our doctoral candidates with a platform for intensive exchange and collaboration before the retreat continued with all participants on September 21 and 22.

Overview of the Agenda

The first day, exclusively for PhD students, began with a welcome session and an open discussion about current research questions and personal concerns. After short presentations and updates from the project groups, participants engaged in relaxing activities in the castle park. The afternoon was dedicated to the kickoff for the LernMINT project, where various media formats for research outputs were discussed. The day concluded with a dinner and evening activities.

The retreat itself started on September 21 with a communal breakfast and a welcome session for the PIs. The morning was marked by a poster session where PhD students presented their progress. After an active lunch break, there were two keynotes and a PI meeting. The evening ended with a pub quiz, which strengthened team dynamics and provided a lot of fun.

The last day, September 22, began with a joint start session, followed by lectures and personal discussions. After a break, participants continued working in groups on their projects. The retreat concluded with presentations from the project groups, a final reflection, and planning for future events.

Highlights and Insights

A standout highlight was the poster session, where PhD students showcased their research projects. These short presentations allowed for valuable feedback and new perspectives in a short amount of time. Particularly impressive was the keynote by Dr. Martin Merkt, which highlighted innovative methods and current trends in research.

Another highlight was the kickoff for the LernMINT project, where participants developed creative ideas for disseminating their research. From books to blogs to symposiums, various media formats were discussed, and concrete plans for the future were made.

The pub quiz on the first evening of the retreat provided an entertaining way to relax and strengthen the team spirit. It was not only an opportunity for laughter but also a means to enhance group dynamics and deepen collaboration.

Conclusion

The Research Retreat at Schloss Etelsen offered our participants the opportunity to advance their research, build valuable networks, and develop both personally and professionally. The combination of intensive work sessions and relaxing activities created a balanced and productive atmosphere. We are already looking forward to the next retreat and the many new insights that will emerge from it.

The retreat was not only a milestone in our research activities but also an important platform for exchange and collaboration within our scientific community. Until next time!
